Part 10 - The importance of training

You need to have the right skills in place before you start any digital transformation project. The likelihood is you you’ll need to employ some people who already possess these skills. However, don’t forget that you probably have a wealth of employees who are extremely willing to learn new skills and have the capacity to do so; they just haven’t been given the chance.

This should also include your leadership team. Everyone needs to be onboard and understand what’s required of them during any digital transformation.

But where do you start?

First things first, you will need champions. These are people within your organisation who have been involved in outlining the strategy and what it will involve. They’ll be enthusiastic, with the skills and knowledge to fire people up and get others onboard. These are the people who will be your advocates for what's coming.

Next, you’ll need to get your leadership team to buy in. Get them into workshops with your digital champions; take them through the changes planned. Show them the objectives and metrics you are looking to achieve, and explain why they are crucial to this process. From here, provide training plans that will arm them with the knowledge they need to be able to sell the transformation to any board or staff members that they talk to about it.

Once you’ve done this, move forward in sharing the strategy with the rest of the organisation. Hold workshops and team meetings to let everyone know what’s going on, but remember to quickly follow up on this with individual training so they’re fully on board.

Empower your employees

Once employees are informed, make sure you continue supporting the change by providing ongoing training, workshops and mentoring to guide them through the change. Also consider creating videos which explain what’s going on, which staff can access at any time when needed.

Look at maximising your company intranet as a central point for information and help. Encourage staff to add content in the areas where they have specific knowledge. And encourage your management team to read these posts, comment on them, and vote/like the best ones. Knowing that your leadership are taking an interest in the change will increase your employees’ engagement.

At the end of the day, having a ‘big bang’ announcement on what you’re doing won’t work. You need to empower your people to change, and support them to do it.
